JUST THE JOB

Introduction

In this webquest you are going to find out about job applications in an English speaking country and how the process and the paperwork required is different from in Portugal.



Exercise one

Look at the pictures of jobs below.



Do you know a job title for these jobs?
Which of these jobs would you like to do and why?
Which would you not like to do?
Discuss with a partner or group and then write a text to send to the teacher...

Exercise two

Make a list of the words in bold in the paragraph below then check them in a dictionary or on http://pt.bab.la/dicionario/portugues-ingles/ , compare them with a partner, finally post your agreed list on this webquest page.

When a company needs to recruit or employ new people, it may decide to advertise the job or position in the appointments section of a newspaper. People who are interested can apply for the job by sending in a letter of application or covering letter (US2 cover letter) and a curriculum vitae or CV (US resume) containing details of their education and experience. 
A company may also ask candidates to complete a standard application form. The company’s Human Resources or Personnel department will then select the most suitable applicants and prepare a short list of candidates or applicants, who are invited to attend an interview. Another way for a company to hire is by using the services of a recruitment agency (US searcfirm) who will provide them with a list of suitable candidates.


Exercise three 

Match the verbs 1 to 6 to the nouns a) to f) to make work partnerships, then decide the on the possible order for the events from the employer’s point of view compare with your partner. Post your agreed list on this webquest page.

Task 

This webquest has three basic tasks Plus a self evaluation:

-Firstly, a task that can be done in pairs or alone, you are a careers advisor at a university and you need to collect relevant information to help students applying for a job in an English speaking country (UK/USA). 

This information has to be presented in the form of a list of tips under various headings, CV or resume, covering letter and interview. 
Focus on the major differences between the English speaking countries and your country. 

-Secondly, a task to be done alone, you are yourself and you wish to be considered for the job below. Prepare your application in line with the guidelines you and your partner have prepared. Apply for the job by sending your application and covering letter to the email address in the advertisement.

ADMINISTRATOR - BIO TRACK 
£16,000 p.a., plus Benefits 

Required to provide a seamless, interactive service between salesmen and clients, you'll liaise closely with both parties to schedule deliveries and discounts, as well as resolve queries and maintain an accurate filing system. 
You will also undertake an element of project and secretarial work for the Sales Manager. Quick to learn systems and able to think on your feet, you should be a first class administrator, who is ideally able to display experience in a busy office. In order to effectively deal with customer queries, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are key requirements, as well as fluent German and possibly another European language.

Process:
Working in pairs 
1) Work in pairs if possible or using one group of three if necessary. If anyone wishes, he or she could work alone. A list of students on this course will be on the course page together with email addresses and contact telephone numbers. It is important to form groups early in this session, as there are many tasks to complete. 

2) Pair or group work - Work through the introduction exercises, compare your answers with your partner post your agreed answers to the webquest page. 

3) Pair or group work - Prepare a list of tips for producing a C.V. or resume in English, a covering letter and interview questions
This is the main task, concentrate on tips that show the difference between Portuguese and English CV’s covering letters and interviews. 
Split the tasks to make the work easier. 
You do not have to visit all the web sites but scan them all before you decide on which ones to use. 

4) Pick up any new vocabulary check on Leo.org or in the dictionary and make a vocabulary list for the group on the group page.(all through the task) 

5) Prepare and agree your lists and post to the webquest page 

Working alone
1) Working alone-Read the job advertisement carefully, check any words you do not understand on Leo.org, in a dictionary or on your group dictionary on the webquest page. Add any new words to the group dictionary.

2) Working alone-Apply for the job; send your full application to the email address given, follow the instructions carefully. Check all the tips you and your colleagues have posted to the group page. 

3) Working alone-Prepare a list of 
a - questions you might have to answer at an interview and 
b - questions you could ask at the interview from the advice on the web sites. Look at the tips your colleagues have posted about this area and then post your individual lists of questions to the course page.

4) Working alone-Evaluate your work; look at the evaluation page how well do you think you have done on this exercise.
